Hello, my name is Serenity Garcia and I am 19 years old. I have lived in New Mexico my entire life. I grew up as a “Christian” but would not live that out and it was more of a title. I struggled with depression and addiction for years to try and fill that emptiness. At the end of my junior year of high school, I was completely set free by Jesus. He was everything that I was missing. He saved me from the destructive path i was going down. There is so much freedom through Jesus and I want everyone to have the opportunity to experience freedom through Him.
I am currently in Kona, Hawaii at a Discipleship Training School. I have learned so much about Gods character, His voice and the harsh reality that 3.2 billion people have never heard the Gospel and it is even illegal to share in certain countries. I never really thought missions would be a dangerous job but hearing the stories of what people had to endure to spread Gods Word has truly changed my perspective. The lengths people go because God has told them to go has me in awe. People die and are tortured for the Gospel to be shared. I expected to be scared or afraid hearing these things but it just set my heart on fire. Being a missionary is not comfortable, it’s not safe, but Jesus is SO worthy.
I will be leaving to Guinea Bissau, Africa on December 23, 2024 with a team of 12. There are so many injustices in Guinea Bissau. It is one of the poorest countries in the world. The child and drug trafficking are extremely high. Over 70% of religion goes to Muslim and folk religion which also leads to spiritual practices and rituals. These practices and rituals involve FGM and absolutely torturing and brain washing young girls into being child brides to men around the age of 40. This nation needs the Gospel. My team is going to be doing house to house ministry, orphan ministry, working at a pregnancy clinic, women and children health ministry, and Bible distribution ministry. One of our goals is to give every single home in Guinea Bissau the opportunity to have a Bible in their home. We will be going to islands that have never in history heard the Gospel or the name of Jesus.
Being a missionary in a DTS also means I am booked. I worked three jobs before coming to Kona to try and get all the finances I will need but only by the grace of God am I here. He has provided so much for me to be here. I am extremely grateful for all of the generosity everyone has given! I know this is where God has called me and where He is calling me to go.
Every single Christian has a part in the Great Commission, whether that’s being a sender/giver or a doer/goer. You can fulfill the call of being a missionary at your home, school, work or out in another country. I believe i’m a goer to specifically nations that have never heard the Gospel and those that are the hardest to reach. I am a very do it myself person but God has humbled me and this is where I need my brothers and sisters in Christ to come behind me to help spread the love of Jesus to those who are overlooked and forgotten! I believe God is going to provide every penny!
If you feel led to partner with me in this mission please do so by praying, sharing and giving! By doing any of these, you are now part of this mission!
